If you are not on a cruise line excursion, you are not allowed to leave the pier area. Every tour is escorted by a park ranger. $25 from each excursion goes to the community.
After tendering into the dock, we had to take a 6 person boat out to another large boat for a 20 minute ride to the only village on the island. It has a population of 1500 people, who are fishermen. The houses are all built on stilts, not only because they are on the edge of the sea but because I imagine it makes it harder for the dragons to come into the house at night....only guessing
There is a small health facility and a nurse comes once every 10 days. In an emergency (dragon bite?), they are 4 hours by boat away from help. We visited the school and the children performed dances for us. They were so cute. Unfortunately, they have learned at an early age how to beg, but they are charming. The goats and chickens are running all over the place, and they all look very healthy.
After visiting the village we went to Pink Beach. The sand really has pink grains in it, from the coral just off shore. We went snorkelling and it was amazing! All kinds of different coral and beautiful fish, one that was pink, purple and green. Wished I had an underwater camera.
It was Joseph's birthday today. What a beautiful place to spend it.
It is a spectacularly beautiful island, not at all what I was expecting. I thought it would be a flat, dry place, since it is home to big lizards, but it is totally the opposite. Very hilly and lushly green.
