Where I stayed
Zhongyuan Li Apts, Hebei District
We were, as expected, molested upon our arrival at the bus station. Many cries of 'taxi', us responding with the location, them with 'meter is broken, 25rmb?'. Of course, it only costs 10rmb to get back to her apartment from the bus station, but why should they assume we know that. Very annoying of course, we ended up taking one of the nu-rickshaws, with the motorcycle front.
That night we spent in the town center, searching for sushi - which we eventually found and was both delicious and too expensive.
The next morning we walked through an open air market by her apartment in search of a small park I had found on my handy-dandy pinyin map of Tianjin (to no avail), and then we had lunch at a duck-head place. Duck head was served to us en masse, on a big plate, covered in peppers, and cut down the middle (maybe 12 in all). Truly it was delicious, I love spicy things, but the amount of work to eat around all the bones in a skull is amazing, truly a work of dedication.
After the duck head place, we walked a long time and eventually came to a park in north Tianjin called 'Beining.' The park itself was quite large, with lots of attractions and amusement rides and even a couple miniature zoos, but very few people. I actually felt sorry for most the vendors here. The north end included a new feature called the Zhiyuan pagoda, from the top of which yielded some wonderful panoramic views of the city.
After a visit to the reptile zoo, a round of go-karts and a coffee (instant), we took the bus back to her apartment then grabbed our many things and took the bus back to Jinghai to prepare for Friday work the next day. And no, no day came sooner than Friday.
