The one good thing about our sham Mekong River tour was that it was a nice way to enter Cambodia compared to the stuffy bus. I have to say we were all pleasantly surprised by Phnom Pehn. It was much more modern and developed than we were expecting from the poorest country in South East Asia. IT's defo the best city we've been in so far. All tourists congrigate (think i get a triple word score for that) down by the riverfront which is a lovely lovely view and there are some cool bars and restaurants there. THe best food we've had so far mind you we've paid for it too. We'ev had our most expensive dinner and breakfast in the place. One dinner came to $43 ! There aer a hell of a lot of deformed beggars and many many prostitutes around but the place itself is pretty nice for Asia that is.
Anywho things we did and places we saw. The first night we arrived was a bit mad. HAd an extra happy Happy Pizza in happy Herbs Pizzas and then ended up in a place called Hearts Darkness which was full of ladies of leisure ! Mad alu place that one.
Our first day we decided to go to the shooting range to see what that was like. It's not legal to shoot a gun in Cambodia but the police turn a blind eye. IT was sucj a dodgey place. About 15 km outside the city.WE got a tuc tuc and when we were coming near this small guy in an oversized army uniform had to let down the a chain barrier for us. We arrived at the range and 2 kinda weird lookin fellas shook our hands and handed us a menu with guns and prices ! The lads decided to sample an UZI and a Tommy Gun. That was the quickest $30 they ever spent. I decided to just watch ! When they went into the shooting alley the mand asked them if they'd like to shoot a chicken. Conculsion made. Get the hell out of this place.
Today we paid a visit to the S-21 prison (Teul Song prison was a secondary school converted into a prison to house all of the Cambodians before they were executed in the killing fields) and the killing fields. The prison was actually more harrowing than the fields I thought. THey played an hour long movie for us beforehand to give us a background of the genecidol madness of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. There was also paintings of tortures and the actual machines used to do it. 26 years ago these contraptions were being used !!!!
The killing fields weren't as bad as I'd expected. The place was hidden away about 15 km down dirt tracks outside the city. The main monument held the skulls of 8 thousand people which was really eery but I was expecting to see bones and skulls in the pits. They were just like being down the bog. Rows of pits in the ground with grass in them. There was one tree however that had a sign on it telling us that the Khmer Rouge used it to kill babies. They basically just threw the babies against the tree !!! These guys were inhuman. They killed the Cambodians by making them kneel blindfolded beside a pit. They hit them on the back of the neck with an iron bar and then slit their throats in the pit to finish them off.
We finishe off the day by paying a visit to the Royal palace. This guy is minted. CAnt help but think if he sold one of his golden statues hundreds of the beggars outside could feed for a week. Some people are so poor here. The Tuc Tuc drivers wont eat unless they get a job and when they see ya coming about 10 of them rush at ya from down the street !
We're headin onwards to the infamous Angor Wat tomorrow.
