G'day

So yeah. I'm in Surfers Paradise (its actually called that - not made up by some stoned dreadlocked hippy). First impressions? Ummm....its really expensive here. The whole area is catered for tourists. Yeah it reminds me of Spain or Greece. You know when you drive along the coast and the sky high hotels are everywhere. Don't get me wrong, the weather is beautiful (best in Oz so far), the sea beautiful and the sun out (as well as the 'wearing nothing' women), but its catered for tourists in a big way. There are a lot of touristy things to do, but it doesn't interest me at all. I'm kinda stuck here for a bit, because Byron Bay (possibly Ocean Beach 2?) is fully booked, so I have to wait for people to shift. The hostel I'm staying in is overlooking a harbour, filled with expensive boats. I have had to move rooms, due to me not rebooking my place and I have now gone from a room full of guys, to a room full of girls.........from Sweden.....whohoo!!! The sea looks gorgeous, but like its up for a fight. Seriously, the sea looks like its breaking in 4 places when it comes in. Enter with caution, boxing gloves and expect to get a fat lip. The beach which stretches for miles (aptly named the Gold Coast), is also cool. Its just nice here and for once, it feels like I'm on holiday, rather than travelling. I know I would regret staying in Sydney for so long trying to get work, but the regret is creeping up on me, as its not gonna let go.

On one of the first nights I was here, I signed up to do one of this 'drinking crawls' that a lot of the hostels do. Its the first time that I have done one of these and the opportunity will not come again too soon, so I did it.

And instantly hated it.

Now, I'm all up for drinking as much as the next guy, but I really hate going to dance clubs. All that dressing up (which comes hard for a scruffy bugger), to listen to music I don't like and drink overpriced beer. That plus the fact that the whole thing ended up being a bit like a school/college trip, where there was some kind of monitor making sure no-one was left behind. He obviously sucked at his job, cause I missed the bus back to the hostel and had to walk home for ages, though I hitched a lift for the last leg. Excellent!! Saying that, the view was cool. On a good note, I bumped into Mika from Finland, who I met in Sydney and Ellenor that I met in FIJI!!!!! Australia? Big Country? My ass!!!!

So what else? Ummm lots of swimming in the pool near the hostel. I would swim in the sea if it didn't look like it wanted to kill me. But its been relaxing. I'm catching up on diary entries, writing songs, both funny and normal and even doing some more sketching. I have been in the company of people for a long time, its good to have my own space again.

Also went to a museum called "Ripleys Believe it or Not" Its a museum based on early radio show (now a TV show) about some guy called Ripley somthing, who travelled the world making notes of oddities in humans. They had the worlds tallest man, fattest man, chinese woman with pigs feet, woman with tall necks. Loads of crazy stuff like that. The only reason that I'd even heard about it was due to my planned trip to Mexico (which didn't happen due to OB, beers, Ellis and having a good time). Anyway, there is this guy in Mexico that built his own island which flaots on a raft made from 4000 plastic bottles. His island looks like heaven and it was a major factor, in me deciding to go travelling for a bit. I can always see it another time, but this island was originally featured on this show (and also in The Sun newspaper yonkies ago). Anyway, check it out.

I've been playing guitar outside my room in the evenings which was getting a bit of attention. You know, I think I might actually be good at this. It was a little difficult with sweat pissing down my face, and once I had finished, my crowd disappeared as fast as they had arrived.

Mostly though, I have just been bumming it and relaxing. Its all good
