Early in 2009, I said to Jeff, “If we keep doing the same thing every day, we’re going to keep doing the same thing every day”. Sounds really “duh”, but what I meant by it is, if you never go out of your comfort zone, continue on the habit trail, (get up, work out, go to work, come home, eat dinner, go to bed) without any drastic variation, nothing in your life is going to change. This might be fine for some people, who like what they get up and do every day. But not for us. We were both starting to drag out of bed in the morning to continue in the daily grind.

Finally in July, Jeff came home from a run one day, and I could tell he was excited to find me. He said, “Let’s do it, let’s travel the world!” And just like that, after 10 years together, Jeff became the adventurer, and I became the practical one- “what will we do when we get back?” Then the fear and doubt crept in, and we decided to move to Colorado instead--safer, I said. I was worried that we would travel around the world, deplete the money we had allocated for our “year to do something different”, and end up right back where we started. So we put a “For Lease” sign in front of our house, and were looking at places in Colorado.

Then we went to Chile for Jeff’s 50th birthday.

While at the top of an isolated volcano on Easter Island, we met a girl from Seattle who told us she had just quit her job and was traveling for 6 weeks. It was her dream to travel the world, but she hadn’t planned or saved for it yet. Upon hearing this, with all the wide-eyed wonder of a 4 year old, Jeff turns to me and says, “IT’S A SIGN!” And then, as if the world was conspiring in our favor, the next time we logged into email, there was a note from our realtor - there was a contract to lease our house! We looked at each other, shrugged, and said, well, we have nowhere to live, let’s pay rent around the world instead of in Colorado!

Let the planning begin!
