The build up to Christmas was long after we got back from Chicago and bid Lisa farewell.Everything was suddenly a lot busier and the days were starting to drag. The mild, crappy weather didn't do much for our lagging "festive spirit". Fri December 23rd however things started looking up! We realize we had not yet bought presents for each other or anyone we were visiting for that matter so it was an 8AM Marshalls/World Market/Best Buy/Old Navy shop off. This unlikely cluster of stores has everything Phil and I could possibly want!
First of all there is Marshalls. Myer style clothes, that have not sold in complete collections (i.e. there are a few items left and the season is finishing) for 50-70% off. I like! Some favorite purchases have been my 4 dollar (used to be 35) and my 50% off tweed winter jacket.
World Market has international food and drinks for sale from all over the world. Plus a lot of artsy international items... We stocked up on white choc liqueur, Italian desert wine plus I got Phil a 9 pack of International winter brews and a big bag of dutch choc. He got me my favorite fudge, some candles and other girly things.
Best Buy is an electronics store for EVERYTHING. Set in huge warehouse it has lots of day dreaming fun!
And Old Navy is cheaper, in style, wear one season items. Perfect for us to buy and leave here!
We also managed to find Marianne a cute wind charm and Collier a nice bracelet.
Christmas Eve was spent with a lot of relaxing. Big plans for a feast were discussed but not put into action until about 5PM. Whoops! Lucky American supermarkets never shut (literally open 24/7 every day of the year). On the menu was a delicious Surf and Turf (I was determined to have prawns!), on a bed of garlic mash. Curried shrimp on baguette, a huge salad and a roast chicken (which we never got to!) Desert was tablet (yummy!) and a failed pavlova... We had Dave who works on maintenance and lives on camp come over for dinner so there were 4 of us.
Christmas day started bright and early, I skyped home and opened my presents on there (Thanks Mum!). MY favorite presents were the scarf, and jewelery. And the thermals have been worn plenty of times! We headed off to Marianne's at 10.30AM for eggs Benedict and champagne... Yum! Back home for an afternoon nap then headed to Saluda for dinner with Colliers family.
Her sister has two children, Finn who is 7 and Hurley who is 2.5. Was so nice to be around kiddies on Christmas day! We watched Harry Potter then went to the rental log cabin which was right on the banks of the Green River. The next AM we went for breakfast and experienced our first cinnamon scrolls in a can! You rip the paper off the outside of this can, which then breaks apart on all sides and inside are 6 compacted scroll to bake. So bizarre-but so good! After that we headed home and relaxed!
New Years Eve was slightly less busy! After we had driven 9 hours back from the beach we had a big afternoon sleep and decided against driving to Asheville for the night and settled for our fave-J street! They had a delicious menu for New Years and I had Blueberry brie with apple and strawberry's (sounds weird-but amazing!) and garlic shrimp on a mash potato base. Phil got half of a duck on rice (it was so yum!) Unfortunately I had had a few baileys before we headed out and that mixed with cheese and wine and shrimp left me feeling very, very ill! We caught our first (and possibly last) taxi home from Brevard (a 7-10 min trip) and were charged 17 dollars-ouch!
New Years Day-Gatekeepers table for some choc chip pancakes and coffee. Mmmm-mmm
I have a good feeling about 2012. As Phil keeps saying-I hope it goes slow but I have a feeling the year is going to fly by! We have lots to look forward to-a ski trip in Jan, Atlanta for a conference in Feb, pre season fun in April, a full and busy summer. And then its the home stretch! Mid Aug-Nov1st we will be training the new 18 monther and getting ready to head out! Plan so far is to Road Trip a bit more of the USA and perhaps check out Canada and then head home for a Perth Christmas.
Its the holiday times when we miss home the most, so I am glad it is over and I am already more than a little excited to get home and see friends and family!
