We travelled by taxi from Cusco to Ollytaytambo. This was another wild rude, without working seat belts, speeding, passing on double lines through winding mountain roads and villages. We then boarded the Peru Rail train to Aguas Caliente. The train was very comfortable and we saw beautiful mountain views as we followed the Urubamba river course: steep rock faces and rock cut away to accomodate the train. On arrival, we hiked along the river for an hour until it began to rain. The river is full and raging as it flows steeply over rocks, through the gorge.
After the rain ceased, we walked over to the Inkaterra Pueblo Hotel, which is the most exclusive hotel, here. The beauty of this site is the amazing walking trails, on the redort property. It was a paradise! We walked for 2 hours and saw guinea pigs, grouse, bromeliads, orchids, calla lilies, rhododendrons, wild avocados, bird of paradise , waterfalls and streams in a lush, mossy wetland. We saw the hotel's herb garden, which contained herbs I had never heard of, including Herba luisa used for tea, salvia, which tasted bitter, and toronjil, which tasted like grapefruit.
We only encountered grounds keepers, not a single tourist!
