After breakfast, Bill and I helped to guide 18 sheep and 2 goats from their overnight pen to pasture and then t
ied their ropes to pegs in the ground. The goats got away and I was able to catch one and the eldest sister in the family captured the other. Again, it is not so easy running after a goat on hilly, rocky terrain at 3800 metres altitude. Afterwards, we hiked to the top of a hill and we became exhausted.
The living conditions are quite primitive compared to what we are used to. The kitchen consisted of a small wood-burning adobe stove, one small cupboard for dishes and food supplies and one small table and 2 benches. The room was smoke-filled and we could not all be seated at the table together. The families have to buy wood for cooking, and at this altitude, there are few trees from which to obtain wood. I enjoyed the quinoa soup, and the fresh eggs from their chickens, put I must say that the rest of the food did not appeal to me: some kind of little whole fish that looked like smelts and lots of carbs ( rice and potatoes). Later we travelled by boat to visit the Uros Islands, where Peruvians have lived for 600 years on floating islands made of reeds. It was a bit touristy but interesting.
