Bonjour! Yiassas! Salve!
To quote a famous songwriter, My bags are packed, I'm ready to go. This song always gets stuck in my head as I am about to leave on a trip. To be honest, my bags have been packed for about 2 weeks. Have to be ready, just in case the pilot decides I need to leave early- you know, very typical stuff. Again I am sticking to just a backpack. Very different from my first European trip. I had a huge suitcase filled to the max, a small duffel bag, a small carry on and a purse. Lugging all of that around the cobble stone streets of Europe was so not fun. So this is why I invested in a great backpack.
I'm sitting here at my table waiting for Sascha to get here. Her mom, Carolyn is driving us to Seattle where we will spend the night before flying out on Friday. I should mention that is 4:30pm on Wednesday, and Sascha isn't picking me up until Thursday at 11am.... I'm ready!!! Lets go already! I always get super impatient before I leave on a trip. Time crawls by. Actually, Sascha and her mom drove me to the airport the first time I went to Greece 2 years ago. That was a crazy night. My flight left at 8am on a Saturday so Sascha and I got together on Friday evening to have dinner, then we went to my moms house where I parked my car for the 3 weeks that I was gone. My mom drove us back to my house and we said goodbye. I remember her being nervous about my leaving the country. Anyways, we got no sleep that night. We had to do something about my suitcase, and ended up removing at least 5-10lbs of stuff out of it. We watched Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants- because it was partially filmed in Greece, and that is where I was on my way to. We went to bed at about 2am and had to wake up at 4, but slept in and ended up waking up at around 5am I think. We had to rush to make sure we were ready by the time Sascha's mom arrived. We ended up having to go back to my moms house because I had forgotten my camera in my car! Can you imagine? A photographer without a camera, in GREECE?? No way.
Once at the airport we were somewhat lost as to where to go, but we found our way and said goodbye. I was so sick/nervous. 3 weeks in the Mediterranean by myself! Flying from Vancouver to Toronto made me nervous, but soon after that I got used to flying. Now I love it, I love the feel of taking off and landing. Turbulence is fun too! I had to get used to flying, I was taking 7 flights on that trip!
Now I'm a pro at airports and flying. Often I will end up helping lost travelers find their way. Note that this does not apply to the Fuimicino airport in Rome. This is the airport from hell. Which makes sense because the worlds worst airline, Alitalia flies out of there. *Shudder* I am eternally lost at the FCO airport. I should get to know it quite well on this upcoming trip. I will be there 4 times over the next 5 weeks.
The excitement is building, the Euros have been purchased, and the bags are packed. Now all we need to do is get to the airport.
