Monday we met in the main room at 6:15 to start our trek to the Great Wall. It was a 4 hour bus ride through the crazy traffic of the city, the construction, and later, the rural areas surrounding Beijing.

We started at Jingshanling and had 4 hours to get to the other side -- Simatai. The section of wall was supposed to be 10 km, but I don't know that they took into account the 30 minute vertical hike to get from the gate to the start of the wall, nor all of the (incredibly steep) ups and downs. The wall was incredible -- just like it was supposed to look. It went on forever in both directions, up and down and up over the tops of the mountain range. As we walked on the wall we kept thinking of the people who once lived and worked here, or who might have had to pull a cart along the wall for a living. I could just barely walk it, and the thought of having to pull a heavy cart up 250 ladder-like stairs almost made me cry. It was a nice day, though a bit hazy.

It was really, really, really hard, but we're so glad we did it.
