Having not stopped in Lauzerte for a day as planned, I have a day in hand, so have decided to treat myself to another night in Peniscola.

I did some clothes washing and then spent 3 hours walking around the resort. Multi Marcas Motos kindly supplied me with a handful of crush washers and o rings for Babs and refused any payment.

In true English abroad style I bought a Telegraph and sat with my feet in the sea for an hour before wandering into town to return to Portons Restaurant where I had eaten last night.

Purchased a cheap small electric kettle (I had planned to get one of these before I left but forgot – another recommendation from the HUB adventure bike seminars), so at last there is coffee and tea on tap in the European hotel rooms.

After lunch I begged some scrap cardboard boxes from reception and spent 3 hours on Babs, replacing the rear drive oil and using the new washers and o rings – the rear wheel was totally covered in oil from the leak – thankfully as the sidecar rig doesn't lean the skid danger is not like a solo bike, but it still needs fixing.

I removed the rear wheel again to double check the rear shoes as there seems little braking. Plenty of shoe left, so reassembled and reduced the lever play again, leaving the sidecar brake as it is to try and balance the rig which veers too much to the left on hard braking.

The final and longest job was adjusting the valves– the exhaust tappets were tight so there is a vague hope I might see a tad more power. She has done 29600 km now (a lot for a 2010 Ural), so it must be nearly 3k km since they were last checked. Trying to adjust the left hand cylinder with the sidecar is fiddly to say the least. I do struggle with this, the clearance always changes when I tighten the locknuts – but I am determined to develop a routine especially before I head further south.

I also cleared out the tool compartment as the WD40 had decided to spray itself empty sometime over the last 2 days – well at least that box won’t rust.

Hopefully the day break from riding will help me as well, but it can be a bit lonely when the day isn’t structured around the bike and the ride, so I’ll be glad to load up and see how far I can get tomorrow.
