Flag of Israel  , Galilee,
Thursday, February 21, 2013

So today we started out with a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee.  It was so cool!  Well first it was a little surreal, as we pulled away from the dock they raised an American flag and played our national anthem.  It was a little weird and cool at the same time.  Pastor Larry did a brief devotion, and we got a fishing demonstration from the time of Jesus.  After that, it was picture frenzy while we rocked out to Christian music.  Aside from all the photos, it was just such a peaceful place, and at one point they turned off the engine so we could feel the full force of how quiet the lake was.  This is one of the highlights of the trip for me so far - I got emotional on the lake, too.  I have a feeling that will be happening to me a lot on this trip.

After we got off the boat we saw The Ancient Boat, which is a 2000 year old fishing boat they pulled out of the lake in 1986.  You may have seen a special about it on the discovery channel or national geographic.  It's amazing how well-preserved it is.

We then moved on to Mt Tabor, the site of Jesus' transfiguration.  There are churches built over all of these holy sites, and they all have some plexiglass in the floor so you can look down on the supposed location.  They had some beautiful mosaics here, with tiny stones.  Beautiful views of the valley on all sides here.  While we were there, I had a gentleman come up and start talking to me about my shirt - it's an Epiphany Ministry shirt that says "I'm not afraid to go back to prison" on the back.  Apparently he is involved in prison ministry too - they go into New York's Sing Sing prison.  It was pretty cool to have that encounter there.

Next stop was the church built on the rock believed to be the one Jesus put the loaves and fishes on before feeding the 5000.  I prayed for our prison kids there and I also prayed for my fiance, Chris, too :)  From there our day really picked up, and we moved on to the Sea of Galilee again and to Peter's Primacy, where Jesus came to the disciples and they weren't catching any fish, so He told them to cast their nets on the other side and they caught 153.  Then Jesus asked Peter 3 times if he loved Him, and then He told him to "feed My sheep."  From there we went to Capernaum, the site of Jesus healing Peter's mother-in-law from her fever, and also the site of the White Synagogue, where Jesus taught.

And then....Mt Beatitudes, where Jesus gave the Sermon on the Mount.  Pr Larry did a brief homily here, then we had time to explore a bit.  Beautiful sweeping views of the landscape and the Sea of Galilee.  I couldn't help imagining what it must have been like to be sitting there on the hillside, listening to Jesus teach, what the crowd must have thought, what the disciples must have thought.  It was so peaceful and serene, and I regret not having more time to sit in the silence and let the peace that passes understanding wash over me as Jesus reveals His truth to me.  I will have to ponder and process this day more.

After that, what else can I say?!
