While this week hasn't been as exciting as others, I've settled into a much needed routine.
Wednesday night we went to Apollo Theater. It's pretty famous for bringing out new singing talent, particularly for the African-Americans. People like James Brown, Michael Jackson and Lauryn Hill have launched their careers here. It's in Harlem, which is very much an African-American community. We did tend to stick out in the crowd. People tell you not to go there at night, but it's nothing a Peno boy can't handle. The performances there were awesome, being a mixture of hip-hop dance and different styles of singing. There was a 10 year-old boy rapper who was my favorite. His lyrics were so smooth.
On the Friday night we went to Fubar, which is just down the road from where we live. It's a fairly easy going pub with a simple bar, pool table and a few couches. They had a Jameson whisky promotion where they served free Jameson whisky. As you can guess it turned fairly messy.
From Fubar we went to a club called Element. It was a normal doof-doof club. It has the drugged up dancers and a fair few gay guys. There was one dancer who danced like a tradition Russian dancer and spun around every 15 seconds on the spot. A group of us ended up in a congo-line imitating him. This guy did not stop from the time we got there till the time we left. I also got picked up by a gay guy. Unfortunately it was so loud in the club that he couldn't hear me yelling "Sorry, I have a girlfriend". Once he started spinning me around like a ballerina I had enough. It wasn't funny, although everyone else thought it was hilarious.
We all went to an ice hockey game at Madison Square Gardens on the Saturday. I believe the NY Rangers vs Atlanta Thrashers were playing. I always thought Madison Square Gardens was huge, but it's much smaller than the Sydney Entertainment Centre. The game was great even though the NY Rangers lost. There were a few fights and big hits in the game, but I was expecting more based on what I've seen on the tv. It's amazing how quickly they can change the stadium as they played a lacrosse game a couple of hours later.
The rest of the weekend was fairly relaxing. I just did some shopping and watched the NFL semis (not long till the SuperBowl!).
Work is starting to get busier now. I'm going to Connecticut (about an hour drive north) for about a month from Monday, as a client is based there. I'll be coming back to NY on the weekends.
Till next time
