We wake early to pack.  We have to be in Tamarindo by 8:45 to catch the 9am bus.  Before then we needed to settle our bill, get a taxi to a path to a water taxi, and find the bus stop.  when we arrive, the 9am bus has not only left, all the buses to San Jose are full for the day.  We find Internet and a bus schedule and decide to go to Santa Cruz to see where we can get from there.  Then we take turns as gear watch at the Internet store while the other of us does some store browsing.  We stop for a quick bite to eat then to the bus stop where we wait. The bus is late so we wait some more.
When it arrives, all the seats are taken.  We stand still carrying our bags along with 12 other people.  It's hot, so the driver keeps the door open.  I'm right next to it, so I pray for a smooth ride so I don't fly out.  No matter, more people get on, crowding Wende and I to the center.  Eventually people get off the bus and we sit.
In Santa Cruz, we decide to bus to Nicoya.  We again are in the wrong place.  Wende asks a bus driver whos attendant says we need to take a taxi to the other bus station.  A very serious discussion ensues as several men confer.
They keep talking to us though we've told them we speak muy poco espanol, but they seem to think if two people speak very little that combined they speak more.
They do have official taxi's in Costa Rica  They are red with yellow triangle.  So when a white pick up truck comes to fetch us we are apprehensive.  Insistently, the men help us into the cab.  We ride thinking theirs very well may be one of the dumbest thing we have ever done.
There is a large festival seemingly for the police, so the truck can't take us all the way there due to the barricades.  We get vague directions in Spanish, pay the man, and set off.. Lo and behold, there is a bus station.  Our bus is ready to depart, so get tickets and board.
We get into Nicoya after dark and find a hotel.  We try to change rooms 'cause it's hot and the a/c is broken.  The guy shows us that all we need to do is throw a random breaker.  The hotel falls at #3 on the top 5 worst rooms ever.  {For the record: 1) Venice, Italy  2) Merida, Mexico (Yucatan)  3)Nicoya, Costa Rica  4) Genoa, Italy  5)tie between Palermo, Italy (Sicily) and Cancun, Mexico (Yucatan)}.  The bathroom (at least we have our own) has a shower, but the shower head doesn't spray.  It's rather a pipe that comes out and dumps on one's head.  It has 2 settings, on and off.  There is no hot water (we've been told that no hotel in the city has running hot water).  We have a bottom and a top sheet only and they are stained and have holes.  There are two twin beds that are almost as lumpy as the pillows.  The walls are a dingy nicotine yellow and there are cracks in the walls and spiderwebs in the corners.
We have no money left to speak of but luckily for us, the Chinese place takes VISA.  We do however have enough change for ice cream.  I get some trio of strawberry, lemon, and bubblegum.

I dont know wath kind of ' Hotel' you went to Nicoya... But thats te problem with you backpackers. You want 5 star hotel for $10 a night. In Nicoya we have maybe 15 hotels and I dont know how many pseudo hotels .. Those last ones were the ones you choose.
