we have distributed pencils to lots of villages in Mali especially in the small most remote villages .  erins first question is to meet the chief and see if there is a school; and then distribute the pencils through him   :   the issue is that every time we distribute pencils all hell breaks loose; the peaceful village becomes mayhem as the chief decides who to hand the pencils out to . the kids get so excited to have a crayon it's unreal

we have learned the hard way to kind of step aside and that handouts arent a solution. oftentimes a gift as simple as a used bottle of water sends them into a joyous dance since it helps them be able to efficiently carry the most precious of resources:water

a few photos of the pencil distribution on here

I wrote a song about my wife called Ęsafari masterĘ heres the best line

Ęshe rides the boat all day day and camps all night
she wont eat the chicken cause she hates its plight

safari masterĘ

since there are no refrigerators on the boats the chicken rides with you in the back of the boat:   when its time to eat it, well, you know;   then they servre it up nice and salty and erin gets sad.  but my thoughts are it either

1) makes you either appreciate the meat you eat more
or
2) vegetarian

some organizations we have discovered are great to help these families:

1) kickstart.org
2) motopumps to bring water from the river to rice patties
3) unicef
4) potters for peace-if this gets started in mali...

loved the lines to the songs - and the woman it's written about. I'm so glad that you've taken your guitar to share music - it's the international language of the heart!
