the best :

1 -  camping under the stars in small villages along the niger under mosquito net
2- turbans-in northern mali the sahara is hot and sand everywhere= turbans rule !
3-  nescafe and eggs- i became best friends with the live chickens and cattler that would be killed and eaten for dinner- i talked to them daily to the point that i will very likely never eat meat again
4- having 10 kids hold my hand at once with huge smiles
5- kids sneaking out of the village to find brian after his live guitar performance with flashlights in the middle of the night
6- perspective regained
7- OBAMA finally travelling and being from america gives us street cred
8- bottled water
9- the way people just get it done and dont complain
10- amadou and our wonderful guides

worst:
1- night 2 camping when i thought i was being attacked by animals in the middle of the night in our tent aliong the niger river
2- camping night 4 with dung beetles the size of my palm in the sand
3- gnats flies mosquitoes
4- women doing backbreaking work with babies on their back all day while men sit around and hang discussing village 'issues'
5- donkeys get no respect
6- indiana jones sandstorm on night 3 of camping--or--generally being whipped by sand with my contacts in
7- 115 degree weather and you cant swim
8- being stopped by military plice and having to bribe them
9- having to go the the police station in sevare
10 - it takes 4 hours to go 15 miles in the bush

You are the Davidette Letterman of this trip! Whatzzup with these women carrying babies working their hiney's off while men sit....and I know they're not watching football! Is it hard-wiring in the brain?! Keep the blogs coming - loved it!

Men
OK, not all men sit around while the women do the heavy lifting...just me, Ken, Brian, Brian's friends, my friends and Ken's friends. Also, Steve can be pretty worthless, but don't tell him I said so. Loved the pros and cons from Mali...you're an international pro & conner.

Love,

JG

Sounds like home.
Let's see: crooked cops , women doing all the work,
kung foo, playing guitar, taking 4 hours to go 15 miles (I35 at rush hour- slight exageration), mosquitoes (OK, they're probably bigger there), sneaking out at night to listen to music-sounds like home.
The pictures are fabulous. The kids are wonderful. And I'm probably most happy to hear about 'regained perspective'.
It all looks and sounds incredible.
