Prague well and truly lived up to expectations, even despite the hoards of tourists and the overcast weather. I haven't seen many palaces before, so the palace was a highlight, looming over the city from a hill accross the river. To get there you have to cross the lovely Charles bridge with its blackenes sandstone statues, St Nicholas' church, which has one of the most spectacular baroque interiors I have ever seen, and walk up through the Royal gardens, which gave lovely views across the red rooftops and many spires of Prague. Inside the Palace complex is St Vitus' church, which was very gothic. Climbing the twisting staircase of the tower made me feel dizzy and claustrophobic, but gave great views. I didn't actually go inside the palace itself, but may do this when I return to Prague. The town square is also very picturesque, and I spent a morning wandering around the jewish area of Josefov. Particularly sad was the Pinkus synogogue with a list of all the jews from Prague killed by the Nazis, and the overcrowded Jewish cemetery with headstones piled on top of each other.
