Ok, I admit, the only reason we went here was because I wanted to do the Sound of Music tour. And yes I had a wonderful time, and I am sure Andrew enjoyed his afternoon in the pub drinking beer and watching the soccer on tv.
We stayed in the HI hostel which was pretty ordinary but one advantage they had was replays of The Sound of Music EVERY night at 8pm! Whoohoo! So on the first night I managed to make Andrew watch most of it, his very first time. I am sure he didn't really enjoy it as much as me, although I did hear a few chuckles from him so I don't think he found it as bad as he thought he would.
My tour was only for an afternoon, so the rest of the time we wandered around the markets as there was a big festival on. We amused ourselves by watching people trying to eat the 'hottest currywurst in the world' and found other exciting things in Salzburg such as where Mozart was born. Actually, I think that is all there is to Salzburg, Mozart and the aforementioned musical. Oh well.
Anyway, onto the tour... we visited the gazebo (photos included), saw the lake the kids fell into when they were on the boat, saw the town from the opening scene and even visited the church they got married in. None of it is near each other so there was a fair bit of bus travel, but that was ok because the soundtrack was on hand and we all got to sing along. It was lots of fun, not only because I was sitting at the front of bus and got a few solos on the microphone (you can just hear me in my breaking soprano belting out 'how do you solve a problem like Maria', can't you!) but also because we ventured out of town a little and saw a bit of the countryside. Definitely worth it for fans of the film!
