I had the fortunate opportunity to go to a Manchester United match. And to top it off, they were playing Chelsea, the team that has won the Primiership this year. Manchester United is not only the wealthiest sports team in the world, they also have the most diehard fans! I went with Carroll, my mom's friend from grade school, and her 2 daughters. It was very interesting to see a sporting event without all the American bells and whistles. No cheerleaders, no fireworks, no electronic board telling you what to cheer and when. Much more simple than that....just some drunk in the back starting a chant and pretty soon the whole stadium would join in. They also have interesting cheers (accompanied by some interesting language!). The leading player for Chelsea is actually from Russia and was purchased for quite a sum. So their chant to him was "you sold your #*# to a Russian, to a Russian, to a Russian!" The game was during the controversy of Malcolm Glazer buying into the club. The fans are outraged that an American owns the majority of their team. So the fitting chant was "Glazer has to die, he has to die, he has to die." So if by chance Glazer does get knocked off, their are about 67,800 suspects.
I had one evening out in Manchester. Carroll's daughter Amanda works in Manchester, so she took me out to see some new places. Manchester had a history of being a industrial town, but over the last decade they have really become a cultural hotspot. There are loads of places for shopping, live music, or just about anything that strikes your interest. I was really impressed with what I had a chance to see.
