Where do you find stromatolites? 3.5 billion years ago stromatolites dominated the earth and you could see them everywhere. For the next 2 billion years they produced oxygen. This meant that that air breathing animals could evolve. Stromatolites are now found in very few places, for example in Hamelin Pool in Shark Bay.
Some of these stromatolites got squashed by carts because they were loading ships with wool 60 years ago. You can still see the tracks today. This shows stromatolites are very fragile and you need to be careful not to damage them.
(I got this information from the signs at Hamelin Pool.)
