We stopped in Hermannsburg for pies, petrol, ice and water, and chatted to the Lutheran lady who helps run the general store and other community facilities, still run by the Hermannsburg Lutheran mission where Albert Namatjira grew up. There is a real and visible evidence of Aboriginal disadvantage here: some of the local streets are lined with rudimentary housing with yards of bare dirt relieved only by drifting garbage and rusting car bodies. Numerous scabby looking dogs wander about. But even here, local art evidences a perpetuation of traditional culture, as seen on some rubbish bins outside the cooperative store.
