Devil's Marbles Conservation Reserve

We left Alice Springs after lunch and within half an hour had crossed the Tropic of Capricorn; we were now officially in the tropics!  In the company of Bilbo Baggins (we were listening to The Hobbit) we sped north, timing our arrival at the Devil's Marbles a cool 25 minutes before sunset. Wandering among the rocks as they gradually warmed to an orangey red glow in the quiet of a desert dusk was a beautiful experience, not lessened by the presence of so many others because of the communal absorption in the spectacle.

Hilary writes:
We stayed only one night because we were just passing through and we were actually on our way to Katherine Gorge. It was absolutely amazing to see this pile of rocks smack bang in the middle of the desert.  Alec and I enjoyed ourselves exploring the nooks and crannies between the rocks.

The children both adored wandering about the park and clambering over the rocks, and Alec writes:
At the Devils Marbles I did the biggest walk I have ever done in my life [all by himself].

In a complete break with character, we all arose before dawn to see the whole show again from the other side.  For an overnight stop, we took an awful lot of pictures!
