We crossed the border into SA, stopping to toss out the bag of oranges and other fruit we had just purchased in Mildura. (Our guess is that SA is running a particularly cunning public health campaign where they aim to boost the consumption of fruit and veg by prohibiting it; "forbidden fruit" and all that...)
The trip passed pleasantly; we raced goods trains, and listened to a CD recording of The Magic Pudding read by the fabulous Jonathan Biggins. Thus we laughed all the way through such splendidly-named places as Mingary, Yunta, Nackara, Nantabibbie, Oodla Wirra, Ucolta, Orroroo, Willowie, and Winninowie (some of which might have raised a giggle even without the assistance of Norman Lindsay). Spencer Gulf and Port Augusta hove into view and it didn't at all feel like we'd been in the car for nearly five hours.
The kids were most excited to stay in a motel, and we had a fantastic Indian(!) meal in the Best Western Standpipe Motel dining room (isn't it a great country?).
