Sunday, January 29, 2006

On Sunday Ewa`s husband Makoto had the day off, so kindly volunteered to spend it driving us around the region. We drove towards Mount Fuji ("Fuji-San"), but it was a cloudy day and the volcano is notorious for its shyness. Only a few kilometres away, we still couldn`t even tell in which direction to search the sky. We gave up the hunt for the mountain in favor of a sushi lunch. Be proud - I even tried eel. At this point I`ve been subjected to so many new flavors and textures (ha, "subjected to" - I am of course talking about exquisitely prepared gourmet meals), all I can think about is spaghetti with tomato sauce =).

Onwards to an Onsen. As I`ve mentioned before, any time the Japanese don`t have to spend in the office they tend to pass in a hot-spring. The complex we went to was a hot-pool wonerland. Herbal baths, bubble jet baths, a silk powder bath, a sulfur bath, massage jets, hot, cold & lukewarm baths. Indoor & outdoor baths - which in January air is a hell of an experience - Loooooove the Onsen.

We emerged, lobster pink, squeaky clean & scented, and started the drive back. And suddenly in front of us there was a volcano cone, snowcapped and rugged, and quickly retreating behind its cloud cover again. Fuji-San came out for a little while after all, and my list of quintessential Japanese experiences is now only missing one thing I can think of. Which unfortunately I can`t go into here, but may describe in the future if I ever get to check off that box.
