We arrived at Gettysburg on the very weekend the original dates of the battle. This important date added more to our experience since there were character actors and more events. We went headed to the museum and watched the movie portraying the history of the Gettysburg battle. Prior to getting there we had just listed on audio book Four great Americans, Yesterday’s classics by James Baldwin. Emma’s Hero is Abraham Lincoln and we had just listened to the history of the Gettysburg address Lincoln had made at the cemetary. We were able re-live the battle throughout the museum, but the most intriguing experience was the “Battle of Gettysburg” cyclorama. This fantastic painting brings the fury of the final Confederate assault on July 3, 1863 to life, providing the viewer with a sense of what occurred at the battle long touted as the turning point of the Civil War. It was amazing! What a wonderful way to spend our last excursion on our vacation and the end to a year of U.S. history studies. I have throughly enjoyed history this year and realize it may be hard to top. Our Vacations to D.C. and the east coast this summer has certainly brought the books to life and I am very thankful to have experienced them with my beloved family. We have many memories that will accompany this vacation and I am hopeful will live in the memorys of Calvin and Emma as well!
