Before we left Dongsheng for Beijing we went to a store that had all kinds of foods we'd never seen before. We bought some for the train ride; shown is our favourite (which actually just tasted like an animal cracker). This train ride was pretty bad as far as travel companions go: the family next to us & their little emperor; the man above who, I hate to say it, smelled horrible. Usually the people in China who do things we learned as children to never do (spitting, chewing with one's mouth open) are men (surely I wouldn't mind these things if I were truly Chinese, but alas, I am not). This time it was the mother of the aforementioned family who kept spitting into the rubbish bin (at least it was in the bin); I once tried to look away as she brought up a juicy one and spit it into a napkin but, alas, the old "train wreck" situation.
