There was no smoking in this terminal on our return stopover. Did a law pass within the month? Or did my memory of the smoking areas penetrate the reality at the beginning of the month? I know it takes years to get the smell of smoke out, but I can't actually remember really seeing any smokers. Huh. I am so obviously biased against smoking.

The layover was much longer than I remembered having booked-4 hours in my, so far, least favourite airport all time. It didn't help that our flight from Cairo arrived early, and that soon enough our flight to Toronto would prove to be late, stretching the 4 hours much closer to five.

There is simply nothing to do in this airport. We were out of American cash, had limited Canadian which wasn't really accepted anyway... In order to scare away boredom, I took our Euros from the local cash machine and tried really hard not to consider the conversion. We bought ice cream and wandered around. Quickly getting bored, we spent some more money on UNO cards, magazines and more candy. We wandered more... there is nothing to see or do-have I mentioned that?

We tried to go to a small casino they had on hand, figured we would spend the last couple euros we had, but there was an admission just to get in, and it was more than what we were going to gamble away.

Finally, being almost an acceptable time to go to the gate, we tried caught a little train to the other terminal, which has less to do than the main one, where we lined up with every single other passenger on our flight who clearly had the same idea.

Next time, I think I will have to divide up such a long trip with a day or two layover in a city that is easy to visit.
