Back in Manchester and I've decided to spice the next couple of weeks up by taking day trips on the train to have a look around Liverpool and York. The weather forecast isn't looking too good so I'll have to choose my days carefully. Meanwhile Manchester still has a surprise or two in store for me.
On Monday I set out to look at the Manchester Museum of Art and I ended up thoroughly enjoying the couple of hours I wandered around it. The frontage of the museum doesn't give any indication of how big it is because there is a large three story modern building behind it.This connects beautifully to the frontage and allows them to display many of the really big paintings they have aquired over the last 100 years.
I discovered one of the schools of Art that has been a favourite of mine since I first discovered the line drawings of Aubrey Beardsley as a teenager. I didn't know it had a name, but found out that he was influenced by the artists of the Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood, who began to paint in a certain way in the 1850s. Their paintings often followed Biblical, Arthurian or Medieval themes, and were noted for their brilliance of colour, attention to detail and almost photographic precision. They strove to portray an idealised vision of classical beauty in its many emotional forms.
Above all else the Pre Raphaelites do brightly coloured paintings and they do a really good Nude. What's not to like about that.
The Art gallery has a really good selection of paintings and a hanging man that I got a bit obsessive about cause I took three photos of it. (Don't know why)
After walking around the Art gallery for two hours with my tongue hanging out, i had a terrible thirst and decided to pop into the newly renovated Central Library where I heard they had a good coffee shop. They made a great coffee and the inside of the Neo classical Greek building which has been remodeled to look like the bridge of the Starship Enterprise, was a cool place to drink it in.
Yeah Manchester can still surprise me, but I'm definitely not going on tour of the Coronation Street set, so please don't ask me to...
