What I did
Sun, Sea, Sand and Surfers
So, after our strenuous few days we definitely felt a beach was in order and decided that whatever the cost we were Zanzibar bound. We booked a flight at 10 am in the morning and were on the plane at 12 headed for the spice island. Off the plane into the heat and collected our bags from the baggage carousel (a table in arrivals!) and straight into a taxi for the east coast.
We had heard the beaches on the north and east were nicest and that there would also be some life in these areas. The taxi driver brought us to a hotel and we checked it out. There were bungalows built on the beach, view out straight to the indian ocean, lovely showers....whats not to like. Although it did feel like we were in someone elses honeymoon! Its literally the whitest sand and bluest water....everything a tropical island should be :)
We spent the next few days swimming, sunbathing, eating and drinking cocktails, life was tough! Although one of our cocktails was a bit dodge, we went to a beach hut manned by stoners who had only the ingredients for one cocktail, a tasi tasi which turned out to be gin, vodka, apple juice (that they had to check the consistency and use by date of!) and cinnamon, bloody awful! The sea was unbelievably warm and really salty although there was quite a nice breeze which kept us refreshed. The area is really popular with kite surfers so they entertained us as well.
The area was actually really quiet, totally deserted at night apart from the candle lit bars and restaurants along the seafront. It all feels totally undeveloped, unspoilt...exactly what we needed after kili.
