Today our class went to the Great Wall, and by class I mean about 9 out of 19 students. I considered part of my vacation which started with Hangzhou over the Qingming holiday. I wanted to arrive back in Beijing so I may take part in the class field trip. Living in Beijing has taught me a free meal is definitely a free meal so I am taking part of this free trip to Mutianyu Great Wall.
I started the day off right with a meal from McDonalds, which does receive the highest rating from the public health department with an A rating. After consuming my 22 RMB meal at the east gate of school, more and more students began to arrive. Eventually five of the school's tour coaches arrived and we began to board. The ride to the Great Wall took about an hour and a half this time around as we encountered no traffic and no other tour buses when we arrived at the base.
We hiked up the stairs to the actual wall itself and took our time wandering around on the wall. On my previous trips to Mutianyu, I've been to both the right side and the left side, so this time I stuck with my classmates and followed wherever they went. We started from the toboggan slide and worked our way westward until we reached the lazy cable car lift. Along the way we found other students snapping up photos, a dog, and a donkey.
The trip was more or less the same as previous excursion, with the exception of newer classmates. This time around, I did not purchase anything from the shops at the base of the Great Wall. My ankles and legs were thankful that I did not seek to destroy them by pacing up and down the wall like a madman. The only downside to visiting the wall was the lack of color. The landscape was a muddied brown with a hint of gray from the smog, as the trees were not yet green.
