Where I stayed
In spartan but clean surroundings in Nice, after 8 fantastic days in Lucca. Tan and I did the driving today and went through heaps of tunnels, took one wrong turnoff, received a few toots and endured some hairy overtaking but we did well (i.e. we are alive).
Thursday Franz and Hildegard stayed in town while the rest of us went to a nearby village on a local bus, about 20 minutes into the Tuscan countryside. Mostly walked around and stared at the villas then found a fantastic winery perched up in the hills and had a long slow lunch (3 hours at least). Weather was sublime, got home and had a barbie back at the apartment and watched the people in the town, sipping beers.
Friday we hired bikes and cycled right around the city, took a leisurely hour, then cruised around the other parts, eating and drinking, kicking the soccerball with Nathan or sitting around the cafes. Another home cooked meal courtesy of the butcher downstairs, the baker around the corner and the markets 100 meters up the road. Once Nathan was tucked into bed, Günter Tan and myself, went to a bar that we spotted close to the art school drinking Grappa and wondering where everyone was on a friday night. Some of the locals said that most head down the coast by cab (20 minutes).
Italy was fantastic, definitely coming back here, hopefully longer too. We havent heard too much news back home other than the fact that it is now 2 Aussie dollars to every Euro and if it hadn't been for the fact that we bought a heap before leaving (and book all accomodation from this point on) we would be in the shyte. I've finally gotten over a cold that dogged me the whole time in Italy, Nathans stair climbing has reached new levels, Inge got her leather bag and gloves and Tan finally got her coffee gelati, so all in all we leave Italy with very fond memories.
