Talofa!

Last night we arrived in Samoa and "lost a day", so this morning its Monday!

This morning we had some time for leisure and hanging out. Samoa is a very laid back country. Everyone is very friendly and everything goes very slowly… especially the Internet. Dad is especially having a hard time with the lack of "connection to the outside world". He really doesn't understand the concept of not being able to make a phone call when you want or not having Internet. I actually believe that he is under the impression that everyone in the world can access the internet anywhere they are, whenever they want, and it is just a part of life. Unfortunately, there isn't universal free internet yet.

Because of the time change I woke up at 5:00 a.m. today and could not go back to sleep. It was pitch black outside, as the sun does not rise until 7:30 a.m.  I don’t know why, but I decided to go for a run. I took a small flashlight with me and ran down a long pathway the resort had. It was nice to get out and move, but I’m fairly certain the people working at the hotel thought I was insane. Afterwards, I went to the pool for a swim and talked Dad into going with me. It was still dark out so we had to get a flashlight in order to get there.

Afterwards I was able to get some chores done and post some of the blog entries I had not been able to post. During the afternoon we had lunch and a performance by a Samoan dance group. Samoan dance has been characterized as a means of maintaining Samoan identity. During their performance they sang, dance and performed with fire. It was fun to watch, and it was interesting to see the way they dressed in traditional garb.

After the performance we headed to the airport to fly to Australia! I finally convinced the pilots to let me fly the plane today. See picture.

Towards the end of our flight, we were able to take another little detour before landing and flew over the Great Barrier Reef. I can't believe how expansive it is. It is truly a world wonder. Upon arrival in Cairns, Australia we headed to our hotel. This is by far one of the coolest hotels we have stayed at. We each have our own little condos, complete with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen, living room, dining room and washer and dryer. And boy, this washer and dryer could not be coming at a better time. I am in desperate need of some laundry!

We had cocktails, wine tasting and small plates this evening since we ate on the plane. And now it is time for me to finish up laundry and go to bed. Tomorrow we go diving on the Great Barrier Reef. Im really looking forward to it!
