Friday 1st October 2010 – CAIRO

Today we gout out and about. No more staying indoors and we went and did a bit of shopping.  We rain to so many friend people.  A guy (Egyptian) who had an Aussie wife wandered and chatted with us down the street as he was heading to pray.  He showed us a local papyrus shop – no tourist prices.  The guy there spoke English and knew quite a bit about NZ and mocked the British, so we got on well and bought some reasonably priced papyrus paintings off him.  He then showed us a local fast food restaurant that was really cheap and we had lunch there.  Kebab type sandwiches... and then another random man stopped us to chat and made sure we had the right direction to get back to our hostel. So a really nice experience today. I was far less busy in the street, being Friday which I think is a day of rest and also 2pm, so it was hot and people hibernate.  The guy with the Aussie wife said we were now Egyptian, since we had been here almost 2 weeks and were walking on the sunny side of the road and not in the shade.  So that was amusing.

So we went back to the hostel for another cool down and eventually went to a restaurant in a local food court , where we were the only white people, not a tourist in sight.  I had a pretty decent pasta for less than a British pound and Ash had meal for about 3 pounds.  Awesome.  There was more hangman in lieu of dvds – damn and then it was off to sleep for our last night in Cairo.
