El Fuerte will be the first point to introduce you to the desert lifestyle depending on the season you visit. Coming from Toronto which was resting around a cool 7C so the 40 plus temperatures was a little much to handle. Head off to Tres Amigos a travel company that provides free advice throughout the Copper Canyon region. El Fuerte has an underwhelming museum and a river along the side. It's a great little town to rest in because we were just waiting for the economic train heading towards Chihuahua.
We decided to splurge in El Fuerte because there is a large freshwater fish source and El Meson General Restaurant on the same street as the hostel. A lunch for two runs around $M300 but it was well worth it as the fish is succulent and you will never find such a deal back home. Really a great meal but I would suggest to focus on the stuffed shrimp if you were to ever visit it. We stayed at the San Jose Hostel where the owner Gaspar provides great rooms ($M250 for a double with A/C) and also helps you with the train.
We took the train the next morning heading off towards Creel and Gaspar pointed out the bus to the train station. Be sure to reach the train station around 9:30 because although the second class train is always assumed to be late by an hour or so it will not wait for you. We expected the train at 10 at the earliest to 10:30 AM but the train came around 9:45 and left within 2 minutes. The train costs around $M415 per person but provides spectacular views of Northern Mexico. Well worth the price.
