Cycling through wine country takes a whole new twist when followed by the great white whale.
Our intrepid group still gabs about last nights' meal at Azul while getting on bicycles for a ride from Salentein across the valley. Jorge has teamed up with local cycling guide Matheus who leads us on a 3 hour ride through local villages and vineyards. Our bus, the great white whale follows us, providing Jorge some sense of comfort that speeding Argentine drivers will pay attention, after passing a huge white bus with hazards blinking driving slowly down the shoulder behind our group.
Once the gorgeous ride is complete, Matheus takes the bikes and we take the bus to a winery few get to see. Actually it is five wineries which started as 7 friends. At Clos de las Siete (vineyard of the seven) the world renowned winemaker Michell Rolland brought together friends from his home area of Bordeaux, France. The seven of them created 5 distinct wineries on a huge area in the valley. Each is built in a unique style. We get exclusive access to two of the facilities and get to taste four very different wines.
By the finish of the tastings, the early bike ride and wines have left us famished. Jorge and Anne and Kurt have come up with just the thing...a visit to The House of Ham. Picture big table in rustic roadside cafe. Picture plates heaped with different barbecued meats and sausages. Now picture 14 travelers plus Jorge, joined by his wife and 2 gorgeous girls, Victor, our operations guide, Matheus the bike guru, and several bottles of good Argentine wine. Attsa some fine lunch!
The rest of the afternoon is naps, another horse ride for those who wish and then a good dinner at Posada Salentein. The grey clouds may be rolling in by nightfall but the glow of this day continues.
