Where I stayed
The place was pretty quiet so we really did have the bridges all to ourselves. On one of the bridges we saw a lot of monkeys right there across the way on the canopy. They were playing, eating, grooming and generally really fun to watch. It was a really treat seeing so many up close. Brendan was pretty great at spotting one mother monkey with a tiny baby on her back too! We had a lot of fun and ended up staying on the bridges for over 2 hours. Aside from the amazing monkey find Brendan proved to be the ultimate naturalist and bird watcher as he tracked down and pinpointed a Bell Bird without the use of a telescope! Pretty amazing! I told him maybe he should consider a career change. Our guide the previous day had told us it was nearly impossible to see these birds because there were only about 300 pairs in the forest and they perch in the highest canopy.
After the Bridges we rushed over to the Butterfly garden and got a tour in Spanish which allowed me to wow Brendan with my amazing translation skills. Do you know how hard it is to translate things like pupa, or reflective wings? We saw plenty of morphos again. A mating pair too! and we saw some butterflies coming out of the cocoon as well.
We headed back to our hotel to check out in the afternoon and had lunch at at little sandwich shop which sported Americans outside chatting it up. Turned out they lived there. Brendan has a BLT with avocado wrap and I had a cheese and mushroom sandwich on home-made bread.
We had a private bus back to San Jose in the afternoon and learned a lot about the Costa Rican education system. Did you know that kids in 1st grade must plant a tree and they must tend it until their graduation in the 6th grade. When the graduate the donate the tree to the agriculture department which then replants it!
We arrived at the hotel (La Gioconda) where we were shown to the Romeo and Juliet suite complete with balcony! It was pretty funny. We had dinner at a place downtown called Spoon which seemed rather popular. We also went to a bar for a beer, but it was pretty sketchy.
Tomorrow we head off to Tortugero at 6am!
