Set off early after a disappointing breakfast. There weere quite a few options, but none of them really constituted a "full" breakfast. Martin had cornflakes and yoghurt (the promised all bran wasnt available and the banana he was offered was not available either) I had a yoghurt and a blueberry muffin. Coffee was also included. Generous.
However we were on the road early, about 7ish, stopping off to buy fuel. The trouble with driving eastwards so early is that you are going into the rising sun,, so visibility was terrible at times.
Most of the day was spent driving through wuite inhospitable terrain. The mountains are impressive to flatland dwellers like us in Bedford, but generally they were no more than interesting. As you'll see from the pictures.
Stopped off in Kingman to go to Walmart to sort out the phone, which we were promised would give us unlimited calls to UK and Aust landlines, but whan we tried, it rejected the call. After a lot of explaining, we discovered that 00 and + are not interchangable, we had used 00 as the international prefix as thats what everyone had spoken of. But it needs +. So thats all sorted, and we can call family as needed.

Went to Subway to get our lunch, a well filled roll each for $5 the two is great value and come out cheaper than buying the rolls and meat etc in a supermarket. Thanks Janet & Gordon for introducing us!

We commented earlier that we were no longer so interesting, but today we had our first instance of someone pulling alongside, then slowing down to we were forced to pass them, so they could take a photo as we drove long.

Managed to get to Kingman early enough that we carried on going to catch up the day we were altready behind. So we have done about 100 miles extra. This means we can spend the time sightseeing along the way, whereas theres not a lot to see along todays route.

Travelled 327 miles. Max altitude was 6930 ft (where we are now) and we climbed 14063 ft altogether

Martin's Monday moment::
Its all going rather well really.I just feel the barren landscape and rock formations are very evocative We are perhaps not quite in a John Ford movie yet but the scale of the landscape and the solitude deliver strong feelings.Mainly "what happens if we break down - is it really easier than Uzbekistan?"
So we get overtaken by huge lorries - all in immaculate condition, laid back hairies on their Harleys -there cannot be many sounds in the world that can convey such subtle power- and one or two immaculate older vehicles either on trailers or spruced up and fitted with V8s.All go meerrily aabout their business with one or two giving us a laconic wave.
met some Brits in the car park outside Walmart,they are on a coach tour and headed for Vegas.They were amazed to see a couple of their own with a car that had travelled the distance from UK
And Stanley? well just a cracking motor (well done Dave who put the engine together and Roger the radiator who built the cooling system for me).We do not purr,more growl along and despite quite high temperatures the car  does not boil or miss a beat. At the end of today's session the engine would not idle but that's probably excess heat around the carburettors.We'll see tomorrow.
We've got a cool box which we keep our water and Gatorade in.You are not suppposed to fill the boxes up from the ice dispensers available at the motels.So we don't -fill them up that is.Interestingly now that we have this sophistication we seem to drink less than we did before.
We are rolling on and currently wrestling with the strange situation of being just around the corner from the Grand Canyon but probably won't go there.We've got more important things to do.See you tomorrow.
Did I tell you we went swimming yesterday? The pool at the motel looked so inviting.Froze most moving parts.

Wonderful state. Are you staying on the i-40? In between Flagstaff and Winslow is the "best" meteor crater on the planet. We missed it on our trip through this area and regret not taking the 6 mile south detour at exit 233.
