Went downstairs for breakfast, the dining room was empty, no sign of anything going on.  We queried it and were told to go on in, which we did. A few minutes later they appeared with a plate with a croissant each, some jam and some mini toasts. Thats it! We ate the croissants, and then I asked for more. After bringing us some jam, then some butter, then pointing to the toasts, they eventually brought another croissant each. Oh, we had an espresso each, which didnt impress Martin, he likes a  bit to drink with his coffee.

So not the greates start to the day!
Anyway, we got onto the road, and decided to follow the National road rather than the autoroute, which maade a nice change. More driving to do as the roads do twist and turn, but at leasty you see a bit more. Loads of fields of olive trees and vines mainly! But charming old towns with fascinating buildings. Unlike what you get in UK. We spotted what we thought had to be a fishing set up, possibly for mussels or crabs or something.

So we went back to see if we could photograph it. As we went back to the car another driver pulled in  and gestured to the car. In the converstaion, which consisted of him speaking Italian and us English, he showed us some photos of his collection of scooters. He have us his card and invited us to visit him in an hours time. And off we drove and him in the opposite direction. Well, we reached the turn off to his town, and went to it. However we had no idea where his road was or whether he would be there, so evenytually we gave up and set off back to the main road. Only to mistakenly turn north instead of south, so we did a big loop and returned to our otherwise satisfactory journey. We'll send him a photo when we get back!

Shortly before we got to our destination, the speedometer ceased to work. Plays havock with the calculation of the miles per gallon! However we do have the Garmin, so we can monitor our distance and speed. No speedo, no windscreen wipers. How did the car ever manage to get its MOT?

Eventually got to Bari, and headed to the port as  thats the most likely place for a ferry terminal. Arrived about 3/3,30, and decided to fix the windscreen wipers which had ceased to work. We always put off fixing them when we stop in the dry and when its wet we dont want to do it in the rain! Yesterday we drove through the rain with no wipers! We stripped down the dashboard, and took out the motor. OIt appeared that the motor had stopped working. Just as we were wondering what to do next, one of our always present bystanders suggested that  it was the bushes, so he took over and cleaned the bushes and the commutator(?) and helped us put it all back together. His name is George and he is Greek and very helpful. So we got it all put back together, whilst always keeping an eye on the bystanders, as we have heard of other travellers who had their luggage stolen by helpful strangers. BUt no one made any moves in that direction.

Eventually boarded the boat in plenty of time, and waited. Instead of leaving at 7.30, we were well after 8.30. Had a meal, studied the  route for tomorrow, and then discovered that we expect to dock tomorrow at about 11.30 instead of the 7.30 as per the booking information! Makes tomorrow's journey a bit more difficult, but thats another day!

Happy to see Stanley keeping you on your toes, nothing like a few things to sort out this early into the trip, Good to see the locals helping out , no doubt you'll loose a few hours to it though. You seem to be putting in the milage which must be exhausting, but necessary . Keep up the good work, look forward to your next post
