All we knew about Brussels, thanks to some very helpful Facebook comments and a quick skim through the guidebook overview, was that:
A) It has amazing chocolate
B) We must eat waffles (even though we don't particularly like waffles)
C) Public urination is a patriotic symbol
D) It makes us think of brussels sprouts

Armed with this knowledge and the directions to our hostel, we were pleasantly surprised to find out that E) We could understand and (sort of) speak Flemish. That deserves street cred of some sort. Even though the hostel was actually more of a hotel disguised as a hostel (or a hostel disguised as a hotel - it's a is a zebra white with black stripes or black with white stripes situation), its one and only washing machine was broken. Since at this point I'd reworn most of my shirts, had run out of underwear, was on day 2 with my current pair of socks and had transferred most of my wardrobe into my laundry bag, this was NOT good. This was borderline catastrophic, even for third parties. A regroup in our dorm resulted in us with Sam from Australia and Justin from Canada (both dorm mates with diminishing clean underwear) traipsing through Brussels' city center, massive dirty laundry bags clasped to our chests and hanging from our wrists, in search of a laundromat. A friendship was formed whilst being hypnotized by the fluttering swirl of Claudia's and my underwear in the tumble dryer. On discovering that Justin was a cook/butcher/barista, the four of us clubbed together for supper.

We picked up another Canadian along the way, Justin #2. The five of us explored Brussels together and discovered:
F) Brussels is the unsung hipster town
G) Manneken Pis is probably the most underwhelming monument ever
H) The amount of record and comic book shops could easily result in my bankruptcy
I) We don't like waffles
J) Belgium beer is amazing. This from a sworn beer hater
K) Apparently we had to HAD TO watch Dortmund play Munich in an Irish pub - though I did manage to sneak my way out of that one in order to enjoy:
L) The Jazz Marathon venues dotted all over the city
