I suppose the point of gap year is taking the long way round, but boy did we take that one literally... Being students on a budget and not wanting to part all too readily with our very hard earned season money, we were overjoyed when the ticket salesman told us he had a two tickets to Frankfurt that were €150 cheaper than the usual price. Jackpot! Who said we were bad at bargaining? The snag? A 9 hour train journey on 5 different trains with a maximum of 10 minutes to get from platform 3 to 102. But who were we to complain? We were beating the system, man! (We almost died in the process. I got bag rash on my bum - not something I'd wish for anyone. A word of advice to all backpackers out there: make sure your backpack is properly adjusted before you sprint down Munich's main train station like a malletjie! And Claudia lost all feeling in her arms. We had entered train limbo and there was no telling how we were going to get out of it alive.) Somehow we made it to Frankfurt in one piece without missing a single train.

Claudia's family took great care of us. We swooned at Bärbel's home cooking and got a highly entertaining variety performance - with interval music - by Claudia's cousins, Paul and Anna, aged 4 and 6. Tillman was kind enough to show us around Frankfurt's city centre for the day. He took us up one of Frankfurt's tallest skyscrapers. Of course, the South Africans held up the queue with their bags' dangerous contents. Claudia's pepperspray and my pocketknife (hey, we're born and bred Cape Townians, ok?) we're unable to continue their journey. True tour guide dedication was shown when Tillman offered to sit in a cafe while Claudia and I went shoe and jacket hunting (only a 25%25 success rate on that front. Probably because we get sick of shopping at around shop 3. We have a pathetic female endurance.)

A big thank you to Wolfi and Bärbel for letting is leave our massive suitcase filled with untravelable items at their house! Now we can become backpackers in the truest sense of the word.
