This past weekend I traveled to Dekalb, Illinois (home of Northern Illinois University) for the Region 6 & 9 Alumni Volunteer Training Conference. Region 9 is my home region, so I know the staff fairly well, but I hadn't met too many from Region 6, so it was nice to get to know them.
The conference was fun (of course!) and I learned a lot. I went through the Basic Skills Training for Presentation and Facilitation. I highly recommend taking both whether you're interested in teaching APO LEADS one day or not. These skills are by no means APO-specific, which was the best part. Sure, I'm up to my eyeballs in APO now, but the things I learn through these leadership and development programs can be carried with me wherever I l and personally and professionally.
For the conference I flew in to Chicago WAY early in the morning and had some time to kill, so Heather (Director of Educational Programs, APO guru, immediate supervisor, and occasional travel buddy) and I milled around Chicago a bit since I had never been. Lollapalooza was going on that same weekend, so traffic was horrendous, but we were still able to see the John Hancock building, the Shedd Aquarium, and Millennium Park, home of the CLOUD GATE. It's the giant, shiny bean in the middle of the park. I've been dying to see it since I learned of its existence, and I finally did.
Best. Day. Ever.
