The last trip we made with our four friends that were visiting was to the quaint harbor town of Kinsale in Southern Cork. When we arrived there we were dropped off right at the harbor and with all of the boats there it was very picturesque. From there we made the journey to Charles Fort which is a bit of a hike from the town. A little history of Charles Fort, which dates from the late 17th century, is that it was constructed to help prevent foreign naval forces from entering the harbor of Kinsale. It remained in use as a barracks all the way up to the end of the British rule in the early 20th century.

Along the walk to Charles Fort you are rewarded with spectacular views of Kinsale and of some nice houses along the water. When we finally arrived at the Fort we went through the main gate and it was like being transported to another time. When inside the Fort you are allowed to explore on your own, and explore we did, we went everywhere you could possibly go. My favorite part of the Fort were probably the bastions, which are projecting portions of ramparts. On the bastions there were great views of not only Kinsale, but also of the Celtic Sea, which borders part of southern Ireland. There were so many things to see in the Fort, store houses, barracks, ports, and a beautiful light house.

After we had seen everything possible of the Fort, we took the long walk back into Kinsale. We were not unaccompanied however, since a dog chose to lead us back. In Ireland people don't really put leases on their dogs and a lot of the dogs go off on their own, which is kind of unheard of in the States. Nevertheless Karen, which is the name we gave to the dog, lead us back to Kinsale and before leaving we got a bite to eat at Stiva's Cafe and had some panini's. Finally after a long day we got back on the bus where everyone took a much deserved nap and took the trip back to Cork City.
