Today we decided to stay in and rest since the state park is mostly empty and we know the ride ahead of us is going to be hard. Our next ride will have very little in provisions such as hotels, groceries, or restaurants. Up to now we have had towns with one or all of these services along our routes, but the next leg will have towns so small that we'll have to search out a park, a parking lot, a driveway, just somewhere to pull off to refuel, snack, eat. So today we will ride just a mile into town and enjoy a relaxed breakfast and lounge around all day while writing.
As it turned out we ended up meeting Ron, another patron also enjoying pancakes, and biscuits & sausage at the only restaurant in town. Ron is also an avid long distant rider and uses the same maps we are using gotten as a member through The Adventure Cycle Association, and so he is familiar with our route. He has been on many trails including in Alaska, Missouri, Illinois and Michigan. It's amazing how biking turns the world into a community. Anyway we spent over three hours with him showing us around the countryside of both Illinois and Kentucky. He took us to an Amish furniture workshop where Ron picked up the frame Scott had made for Ron's rattlesnake skin; and then further on down the road we visited the local Amish General Store; and lastly his newly built minimalist house, where he gave us some pepper spray for the dogs we might encounter and the bolt that we needed for our bike flag pole. Every minimalist needs a helipad and zip line to make it worthwhile! By the time we got back, needless to say, we didn't get any writing done that day.
