It's a great pleasure to wake up to the sound of rain in the Nevada desert, knowing that the night time has eaten up the transit through western Utah and much of the Nevada plains.

It's a great, great pleasure to view the Sierra Nevadas, a high mountain range packed with pine and dotted with yellow aspens. Not as dramatic as the Rockies, but with more switchbacks, tunnels, snow sheds etc, still very scenic.

It's a great pleasure to have all of you here today to enter the Californian central valley, a flat agricultural oasis, flood irrigating rice, grapes, citrus, and all other crops to make California the agricultural giant that she is.

But I thought you all might begin your tour here, in San Francisco, home of the wealth from the gold rushes of 1849 and onwards. It is strange that the train stops in Oakland, not San Francisco proper, requiring all passengers to catch a shuttle bus across the Bay. But perhaps fitting, it enhances the sense of place at entering a city with a natural setting as impressive as Naples.

Senator welcome to our microphones
Is there anything of yours that we can keep as a memento of this visit?
Take California.
