Toby awoke today with a new song, both the familiar refrain of "Happy Birthday" and the new sounds of his new steering wheel present. He might not be able to say much but he can bop along to the tunes. Great to know the kid has rhythm!
On the road, we found out the implications of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park's status as the most visited in the US. It was bumper to bumper. We did a short walk where we could always hear cars, drove for hours in a traffic jam, and eventually found some peace and quiet in a long waterfall walk. Definitely worthwhile. A little more wildlife on the drive back home left us tired, sweaty, but content with our exploration of the east coast forests.
For Toby's birthday dinner, we did our research and went to a local steakhouse. Fantastic food, the sweet potato baked in it's jacket with maple butter was definitely something to copy, and Toby loved his sweet potato pie with chicken. But it had been a long day, so we retired before dessert. The birthday cake and candle will have to wait till our return to Australia.
Today marks 1 month into our trip and reminded us of the reasons we are on this journey- see some American wilderness, eat good food, and spend time as our little family. Thanks heaps on Toby's behalf for the birthday messages on email and travelpod.
