Today's goal was to see the Capitol - apparently the world's most recognizable building. I'm not 100% sure I believe that - think Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, Great Wall, but it is certainly in that league. And deservedly so, it dominates the city skyline like St Peters does in Rome. A massive palace designed to show the importance of the Congress.
We visited the Library of Congress as well, including Thomas Jefferson's contribution of 6,500 books in 1815. With afternoon tea in the sculpture garden, and an early dinner at Clyde's (half price raw bar!) we were getting tired.
But we pushed on to Jefferson's memorial, another neoclassical monument overlooking the city.
The final encounter of the day was with Washington's fantastic metro system, it has to be the most spacious, convenient and architecturally consistent subway system in the world.
