After a little lie in we had a much needed shower and started packing up our stuff. The packs seem to be getting fuller and fuller. Maybe they put on weight while sitting in storage or maybe its the lovely items we couldn't resist buying in Peru! Anyway we had a relaxed breakfast in the hostel before taking a stroll to the Plaza Amoures for a look around. Being Sunday the Cathedral and churches around the Plaza were having services so we just admired the building from outside and peeped inside briefly. Cusco really is a lovely town and we agreed that it would have been nice to spend a few more days exploring its secret alleyways, museums and historical sites. But we were glad we had got the chance to see it although brief. We headed back to our hostel and our pick up arrived for a lift to the airport. We managed to check our luggage in directly to Iquitos and boarded the plane to Lima. Unfortunately our flight was delayed and we realized that there was slim chance we'd catch our connecting flight. It was a bit of a stressful flight and we sprinted out of the plane and charged through the airport to arrive just a few minutes late for our flight. We watched with sad faces as our plane took off but felt better when were booked on the next flight just an hour away. We grabbed some snacks at the airport and boarded our plane for Iquitos at 15:45. Yay. Onwards to the Amazon adventure.
We were greeted by a porter at the airport in Iquitos and taken to our taxi. The ride into town was very interesting. The streets are pretty chaotic with tuk tuks, motorbikes, taxis and trucks. The roads are also not in great condition so it was an exhilarating and bumpy ride. It reminded us a lot of the towns in Thailand. The street side shops, bikes everywhere and families zooting along on the bikes - mommies, babies, children, pets all on the bikes.
Like Thailand, the shop and hotel fronts are not impressive but when you go inside hidden gems are discovered. Our hotel was a bit like this. We pulled over on the side of the road and had to look hard to see the hotel but once inside it was very nice. Our room was on the second floor next to a lovely pool area. We were so pleased to have made it this far. We had a swim and went for dinner in the restaurant. Anton enjoyed the local raw fish dish, ceviche, and Tess enjoyed some delicious chicken and veg. Despite no towels or hot water, we had a great sleep and felt refreshed for our trip to the Amazon lodge.
