There has not been a big expectation of Santiago. It was a required stop to get to Easter Island. So we have not been pushed to see anything specific. Graffiti is obviously a big problem in the city which is very sad.
Our day started with our basic but enjoyable hostel breakfast. We were rather tired after not having a great night of sleep. The jet lag has definitely hit here.
Our waiter last night pointed out a park just up the road which he recommended visiting in the area - so that's where we headed for the day.
The park was really beautiful and setup very well. We found some shade and enjoyed our books for the rest of the morning. Alongside the park we found a cute gelateria come cafe for lunch.
The food was simple but delicious. Tess had a smoked salon sandwich. Chile is apparently the second largest farmer of salmon in the world. They seem to have a very big fishing industry for all a sort of fish.
After lunch we went for a walk around the park. The statues around the park were impressive and numerous. There are a lot of statues in general around Santiago. The main statue in the park was particularly impressive.
Heading to the other side of the park we found the museum of fine art. Just by luck it was open to the public and free entry today.
We both enjoy our galleries. This one had a nice combination of modern, contemporary, traditional and a variety of statues. The building itself is beautiful designed - a central feature inside was 8m high pillar statues holding up the roof.
After our walk of the gallery we headed back to the hostel for a bit of a rest, before heading to our new favourate Chilean eating street. We chose a first story outside veranda restaurant for dinner - mainly due to the excellent busker who was playing jazz tunes on the street below. The verandah was set in the tops of Jacaranda trees in full bloom. Great ambiance. We played cards - enjoying a daiquiri and beer.
After reading the menu in Spanish a number of times and still not understanding - surprising. We saw a platter of goodies come out for the table next door - so we pointed to it to order.
A mix of meats, cheeses and bread - yummy.
To cap off the evening Tess had a hot chocolate and Anton a coffee.
