Needing a sleep in we eventually got up at 9 and headed to the old hotel building for our breakfast. The hotel we are staying in is rather weird as it is made up of two buildings that are in fact a few buildings and streets apart. So last night we stayed in the new building which is really just a block of rooms. The reception, restaurant and swimming pool are at the old building.
Anyway the breakfast was good and Anton was thrilled to see some real bacon up for grabs. We enjoyed breakfast next to the pool before returning to our room to shower, pack up and move to the old building for the rest of our stay. Yes, they didn't quite work it out that we were the same people for the duration of our stay but hey, we feel happier moving into the old building.
We then set out for the airport in a taxi. The drive was actually very pleasant and we got there in good time. We then started hunting around the airport for the correct arrivals hall. It is a seriously strange airport setup with those waiting for arrivals being allowed to wait only in marked areas quite a distance from the gates. After much confusion we waited in the pens and kept our eyes peeled for John and Lynne aka dad and mom.
At last, there they were and all four of us sighed in relief as we hugged and kissed hello. Dad and mom had caught the flight via Addis Ababa so had had quite an adventure during the night but fortunately all went well and they were ready for their Thai experience.
We caught the taxi back to our hotel and sat down for cold beers, fruit shakes and food with some catching up on the side. It's wonderful having them with us and to enjoy the amazing and odd place that Bangkok is.
After lunch we headed off to explore Khaosan Road. As always it was a buzzing street that seems to always be growing and changing. We walked the strips and enjoyed looking at the many wares and offers on sale. From pathai, to fruit on sticks to bikinis and Turkish pants, you name it its in Khaosan Rd. We then headed to the street parallel where Tess spent a few weeks living in a guesthouse, the Green house, when she first arrived in Thailand. Wow it has grown and looks so different from what it did then. In fact the whole street has morphed into a restaurant street. Just a sign of the times and how well Bangkok has done from the tourist industry. We then headed into a travel agent and booked a tour for tomorrow and our train tickets to Chiang Mai. Then it was time for a cold beer and yes, another fruit shake.
On the walk back to our hotel we sampled a banana pancake, pathai, spring rolls, beef sosaties and some fruit. All the must tries of Khaosan road.
Tired and sweaty we flopped into the hotel pool just a little before 9 and felt instant relief in the surprisingly cold pool. Then it was time for bed. A great start to our Thailand experience, we all agreed, and are looking forward to a day tour tomorrow despite the early start.
