So today we had a full day in Petra so headed out after breakfast with a picnic lunch in hand. Our plan for today was to walk straight to the monastery and then to look at some of the other sites on the way back. The monastery is basically an hours walk up into the mountains consisting of around 800 steps (or so the donkey guys told us when they were trying to con us into a donkey ride up).
We were continuously amazed during the walk up by all the views, interesting steps and so on and not so impressed with the donkey poo on route!
But after the 800 steps we came around the corner and there it was - a two stores high facade cut into the rock complete with pillars and alcoves where statues once stood. It it believed that this area was once a huge courtyard with the monastery as the key building. They also believe that it was probably used as a holy site from which offerings were made etc. It was also used as a church at one stage as there is a cross carved into the back wall. The stairs that once lead up to the entrance are now gone so unless you have very long legs or are willing to hoist yourself up you don't really go inside. But the surrounds are also breathtaking and we ventured up the hill to the spot known as The view of the end of the world. It really is a spectacular and terrifying view from up there. We then unpacked lunch and enjoyed a very odd picnic of a whole tomato, whole mini cucumber and some rolls that the hotel packed for us, while marveling at the idea of what it takes to build something like this monastery. While the walk up was a sweaty business we feel it was worth it!
We then took our time walking back and peeped in at a few of the other sites on the way back. Our last stop before we left was the Treasury and we had a small sit down to savour our last sight of Petra. It's been an amazing adventure being here and we feel privileged to have been a part of the Indiana Jones experience.
After a swim and rinsing off at the hotel pool we headed to the Jett bus station to catch our bus for a three hour journey into Amman. We have a 0210 flight tomorrow morning to Bangkok so will be spending most of our night in the airport but.... we'll be in Thailand in the morning, Yay!
